Joanne Hasman, CNM

Joanne Hasman remembers the moment as if it were yesterday.

She was working as a nurse-midwife at McKeesport Hospital in Pennsylvania. Standing in the break room, a feeling of purpose overwhelmed her. Recalling her thoughts that day, Joanne says:

“In that moment I knew in my heart that I was doing exactly what I was meant to do. I was called to do this.”

Joanne Hasman has been a nurse-midwife since 1976, and has been a certified nurse-midwife with Special Beginnings Birth and Women’s Center since 2001.

How Joanne Got Started

Joanne grew up in Rochester, New York. After high school, she moved to Mississippi to begin her nursing training. When she graduated, Joanne moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma and began her career in nursing.

When her son John was born, Joanne was inspired by her birth experience and the friendly nurses in the hospital. She decided to pursue labor and delivery nursing, and started working in the same hospital where she gave birth. It was there that she discovered her special gift for caring for women in labor, and learned about midwifery.

From Nurse to Nurse-Midwife

Joanne moved back to Mississippi, completed her midwifery certification, and took a position as a nurse-midwife in Pascagoula.

After 2 years, she moved to Pennsylvania so that she and her son could be closer to their family in New York. She joined a nurse-midwifery practice at McKeesport Hospital and worked there for 18 years.

“We had a wonderful nursing staff that supported our families and the midwifery model of care.”

At McKeesport, Joanne realized that she’d truly found her calling. Standing in the break room, a feeling of purpose overwhelmed her. She said,

“In that moment I knew in my heart that I was doing exactly what I was meant to do. I was called to do this.”

Joanne at Special Beginnings

In 2001, Joanne started at Special Beginnings. She was immediately drawn to the atmosphere here, and said,

“We get to spend time with our clients here. We get to know them and their families, and they are able to get to know us. The bond of trust we develop is important.”
