Melissa J. Fleming, CNM, joined Special Beginnings in September 2016. She became a Certified Nurse Midwife in August 2016.
A Fledgling Idea
In 1996, Melissa witnessed the birth of her nephew at a birth center in Bethesda, Maryland. The work of the midwives sparked in her a drive to play a role in “helping families to grow and for women to feel safe and positive in their birthing experiences.”
The Journey Begins
Melissa became a doula and a Childbirth Educator. She and her husband started their family. Together, they taught childbirth preparation classes to couples seeking focus on the Muslim perspective of family and birth.
Motherhood to Midwifery
Melissa and her husband have four children. Two were birth center babies and two were born at home. Their family’s experiences deepened Melissa’s love for midwifery:
The collaboration and respect I received from my midwives during
pregnancy, labor, birth and the gyn care in between assured me that
midwifery was my path to take.
For ten years, Melissa taught English and Social Studies at a private Muslim school where fourth grade was easily her favorite level. She left education for nursing school at the Community College of Baltimore County in Essex. Upon completion, she worked as a Registered Nurse on Medical/ Surgical units and then as a Perinatal RN at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Melissa received both a Master of Science in Nursing from George Washington University and a post-graduate certificate in Midwifery from Shenandoah University in 2016.
In joining Special Beginnings, Melissa is happy to care for families desiring hospital or out of hospital births:
I look forward to partnering with all of you for gynecological care and
having the honor of sharing your special beginnings.
